The 1859-S Liberty Seated dime is one of the rarest and most significant coins in the Seated Liberty dime series. With a mintage of only 60,000 coins, this dime ranks as one of the smallest mintages for U.S. dimes from the 1850s.
Known for its scarcity in Mint State, the finest known example, graded PCGS MS-65, has sold for over $75,000, and even in average condition, this coin holds substantial value among collectors.
The 1859-S Liberty Seated dime was minted in San Francisco during a transitional period for the Seated Liberty design. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this coin is part of the Type 2 series, which resumed the use of stars and drapery on the obverse.
It is also notable for having a unique die variety identified by researcher Jerry Fortin. The design on this coin was used briefly before further changes in 1860, when the motto and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" were moved to the front.
The obverse of the 1859-S Liberty Seated dime displays Liberty seated on a rock, with stars surrounding her and drapery over her left arm. The reverse features a wreath encircling the denomination "ONE DIME." This year represents a transitional pattern, as it uses the 1859 obverse design but a reverse style closer to the one introduced in 1860.
Notably, this coin lacks the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" inscription and any motto on the reverse, making it a unique collectible.
The value of the 1859-S Liberty Seated dime varies significantly depending on condition. In average circulated condition, it is worth approximately $424. However, in higher grades, its value can range from $21,767 to $36,021, with the finest known example selling between $75,900 and $100,000.
