The 1861-S Liberty Seated dime was designed by James B. Longacre, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint at the time. With a total mintage of 172,500 coins, this dime was produced during the Civil War era, a time of economic and political upheaval. Coins from the San Francisco Mint had a significantly lower survival rate than those minted in Philadelphia due to extensive circulation on the West Coast and a smaller base of collectors.
