The 1859-S Liberty Seated dime was minted in San Francisco during a transitional period for the Seated Liberty design. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this coin is part of the Type 2 series, which resumed the use of stars and drapery on the obverse.
It is also notable for having a unique die variety identified by researcher Jerry Fortin. The design on this coin was used briefly before further changes in 1860, when the motto and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" were moved to the front.
