The 1884-S Morgan dollar was minted at the San Francisco Mint during a time when the federal government faced a large surplus of silver dollars, leading many to be placed into circulation or stored in vaults. Most 1884-S Morgan dollars entered circulation, with few remaining in Mint State condition.
During the early 20th century, some were melted down, and it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that surviving Mint State examples were recognized for their rarity.
The few uncirculated examples that exist today command high premiums, with the finest known piece achieving legendary status in the numismatic world.
The obverse of the 1884-S Morgan dollar features a left-facing bust of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, symbolizing liberty and agriculture. The reverse showcases an eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch.
The "S" mintmark, representing the San Francisco Mint, is located below the eagle. The inscriptions include “E Pluribus Unum” on the obverse and “United States of America” and “In God We Trust” on the reverse.
Circulated examples of the 1884-S Morgan dollar can range in value from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the grade. However, in Mint State, especially in grades MS-65 and higher, values soar.
The finest known example, graded MS-68 by PCGS, has achieved auction records well into six figures, with similar high-grade coins commanding similarly impressive sums. The auction record for an 1884-S Morgan dollar stands at $575,000.
