The 1903-S Morgan dollar is one of the rarer and more valuable coins in the Morgan silver dollar series, minted at the San Francisco Mint.
Known for its beautiful design and high silver content, this coin holds special appeal for collectors due to its rarity and numismatic significance.
Many of the coins were melted under the Pittman Act in 1918, adding to its scarcity today.
Designed by George T. Morgan, the 1903-S Morgan dollar was produced at the San Francisco Mint. The series ran from 1878 to 1904 and briefly in 1921.
The mintage for the 1903-S was only 613,000, making it one of the lower production years. Many of these coins were melted during the implementation of the Pittman Act, contributing to its rarity in high grades today.
The obverse features Liberty facing left, adorned with a Phrygian cap and a wreath of cotton and wheat in her hair, representing agricultural abundance. The surrounding inscription reads "Liberty," along with the motto "E Pluribus Unum" and the year 1903.
On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings is encircled by a wreath, with the motto "In God We Trust" above and "United States of America" and "One Dollar" inscribed around the edge. A small "S" mintmark is located below the eagle, denoting its San Francisco origin.
The value of a 1903-S Morgan dollar depends on its condition. In About Uncirculated (AU) condition, the coin can fetch upwards of $1,000, while a Mint State (MS-63) coin could command significantly more due to its sharp details and lack of wear. Lower-grade examples are still valued but are more affordable. Coins with fewer bag marks and better luster typically reach higher prices.
